Movement

The World Is Moving. But Is It Going Anywhere?

Physical inactivity drives chronic disease and costs Australia billions in healthcare and lost productivity. The statistics are sobering: a staggering 78%, majority of Australian adults don't meet recommended physical activity guidelines (ABS, 2023). But here's what's really happening - we've designed movement out of daily life entirely.

Our cities prioritise cars over walking. Our workplaces chain people to desks. Concerns persist that there is too little emphasis on sport and physical activity in schools. Our communities lack safe, accessible spaces for natural movement. Then we wonder why a $100+ billion global fitness industry (Health and Fitness Association, 2022) can't alone solve what we've systematically dismantled.

The result? We've created environments that make sedentary living inevitable, then blame individuals for not exercising enough. We're fighting biology, culture, and infrastructure with gym memberships.

This Is Where OTs Belong

Movement isn't a personal failing to be corrected with exercise prescriptions. It's about environments, policies, cultures, and communities that either support or sabotage natural human movement. As OTs, we understand that movement is occupational - it emerges through the places we live, the work we do, the way we get around, and the activities our communities value.

We see the whole system. We understand how urban design influences walking patterns, how workplace policies shape movement habits and how cultural attitudes determine what activities are valued, either encouraging or discouraging daily movement.

What's Missing Without Us

  • Exercise programs focus on individual motivation while ignoring environment
  • Workplace wellness targets employee behavior but ignores sedentary job design
  • Health policies promote exercise but don't address the systematic and social influences.

The result? Billions invested in solutions with people left to believe they are the cause of the problem.

This Is Where We Are at LifeSetGo

We believe OTs can transform the way people engage with daily movement, but we can only do this when we stand united in occupation-centred services as a profession. Every OT needs the clarity and confidence to enable movement for the people and communities they work with.

When we stand together with this understanding, we don't just help people exercise more, we transform how society designs communities, workplaces, and cultures that naturally generate movement as part of meaningful living.

👉 Ready to gain clarity? This starts with mastering occupational case formulation - the foundation that helps us see and define our role in occupations. Train with LifeSetGo.
